Injectable Contraceptives

Injectable contraceptives contain female sex hormones that are injected deep into the muscle and released into the blood gradually. The shot prevents pregnancy by stopping the egg from being released from the ovary.  How long each type of injectable remains effective after an injection depends mainly on the types and amounts of hormones it contains.
